Geronimo the little Bear,

Was walking through the wood,

And soon he met a cuckoo,

Who wasn't feeling good!

The cuckoo was unhappy,

So Teddy asked her why,

"A man is chopping down my home!"

The bird began to cry!

"They want to build a motorway,

She went on to explain,

"So soon I shall be homeless,

Which causes me great pain!"

The Teddy Bear was quite upset,

"How horrid!" he replied,

"But there's no need to worry,

While I am by your side!"

"What can you do?" asked Cathy,

(That was the cuckoo's name,)

"The axeman is extremely strong.

And says I am to blame!"

"Then we must all stand up to him,"

Said our Geronimo,

"Let's round up all the animals,

And tell him he must go!"

Friend Cathy was delighted,

She told him; "You are clever!

I'll stand up to this nasty man,

And then stay here forever!"

So Cathy and our furry friend,

Found all their woodland chums,

And told them; "This new motorway,

Has given us the glums!"

"I bet it has!" sighed Ollie Owl,

"I'll join in your campaign,

"I'll make some super placards,

And put things right again!"

"I'll colour them!" squeaked Mary,

(A friendly little mouse,)

"Because that giant oak tree,

"Is such a cosy house!"

"You're right!" said Sarah Squirrel,

"This axeman has no sense,

I'll join you in your protest,

Because I think he's dense!"

"You're very kind!" smiled Cathy,

"And I am really grateful,

I'll go and make some nibbles,

For we'll need a giant plateful!"

The animals worked very hard,

And Bear was most impressed,

He laughed; "With all these great ideas,

"We'll soon see off this pest!"

The friends picked up their placards,

And headed for the tree,

The Axeman was already there,

And very cross was he!

"You're far too late!" he bellowed,

"This tree is for the chop,

The motorway is progress,

And that you cannot stop!"

He waved the axe towards the tree,

It was a horrid sight,

But everyone stepped forward,

And then began to fight.

"Stop this at once!" cried Cathy,

"This is my home you know!"

"You're just a coward really!"

Yelled our Geronimo.

The big man got so angry,

His face went VERY red,

"You're talking utter rubbish,

This tree must go!" he said.

The woodland folk ran forward,

And Teddy grabbed the axe,

"Now just hold on," he shouted,

"And listen to the facts!"

"We do not need a motorway,

For that would cause pollution,

And so as far as we're concerned,

There's only one solution!"

"He's right there!" bellowed Sarah,

"So leave us all alone,

Friend Cathy needs a special place,

That she can call her own!"

Then all the animals sat down,

And they began to chant,

"You can't destroy these lovely trees,

You can't, you can't, you can't!"

"All right, all right, you've made your point

The startled axeman said,

"I've got a thumping headache now,

I'm going home to bed!"

He took the axe from Teddy,

And quickly left the wood,

Friend Cathy chirped; "We've won the fight,

Just like you said we could!"

"I know," replied Geronimo,

"It's been a lovely day,

For trees are more important,

Than a silly motorway!"

THE END.
