Geronimo
And The Chirpy Cheshire Cat.
While on holiday in Cheshire,
One week in mid July,
Geronimo felt quite relaxed,
And looked up at the sky.
He grinned "I really like this place,
It’s very, very quaint,
If I hadn’t left my brush at home,
It’s views I’d like to paint!"
"But since that isn’t possible,
A country pub I’ll find,
I’m sure a glass of shandy,
Will help me to unwind!"
When he reached his destination,
Bear gasped in sheer surprise,
Because a grinning, ginger cat,
Was right before his eyes.
"Good heavens!" he squealed loudly,
"I haven’t had a drink,
But in spite of that small detail,
I’m seeing things I think!"
But as those words were uttered,
The cat began to purr,
"My Christian name is Carla,
And I like to cause a stir!"

"There is no need to worry,
You’re as sober as a judge,
I lie here on this step all day,
And hardly ever budge!"
"I’m not surprised," laughed Teddy,
"I’d feel the same way too,
So I’m jealous that this sun trap,
Has been reserved for you!"
His new friend stretched her paw out,
"I bet you are!" purred she,
"But if you were to stroke me now,
So happy I would be!"
Geronimo winked at her,
As he got down on his paws,
He laughed "I really envy,
This silky coat of yours!"
As the sat there in the sunshine,
He tickled Carla’s chin,
And she in turn responded,
By giving a huge grin.
"This is heaven!" she purred loudly,
As she tilted back her head.
"You’ve really got the midas touch,
I feel it must be said!"
"In that case," said our furry
Friend,
"I think I’ll stay a while,
But one thing slightly puzzles me,
Where did you get that smile?"
"That’s simple." Mewed the happy
cat,
"When I was very small,
I was fostered by a couple,
Who didn’t care at all."
"They didn’t feed me titbits,
So I grew so thin and weak,
Then they dumped me in the river,
And my future looked quite bleak.
Then one day I was rescued,
By the landlord and his wife,
And since that very lucky day,
I’ve had a lovely life!"
"They cook me lots of tasty meals,
And fuss me all the while,
Which is the simple reason,
Why I wear this lasting smile!"
"Well lucky you!" beamed Teddy,
"It seems you’ve got it made,
Why don’t you come and join me,
While I sit down in the shade?"
He sat down at a table,
Beneath a willow tree,
And very quickly Carla,
Had curled up on his knee.
The landlord came straight over,
And served Bear with his drink,
He smiled "Now sip this slowly,
You’ll be here a while I think!"
"Me too," Our kind Chum giggled,
"But she’s such a super cat,
She’s fallen on her feet with you,
I’m pretty sure of that!"
"We love her!" smiled the landlord,
"But now I’ve got to run,
It’s getting close to lunchtime,
So there’s masses to be done!"
Geronimo sat back at once,
And then he sipped his drink,
"I’m so glad I came by," he sighed,
"It was pure fate I think!"
"I quite agree!" purred Carla,
A lot of fun I’ve had,
Because you’re cute and cuddly,
And just very slightly mad!"
"Oh thank you!" Bear Grinned broadly,
"The sweetest things you say,
At least I’m not a lazy lump,
Who sleeps throughout the day!"
The Cheshire cat glanced up at him,
And licked him on the nose,
She mewed "You’re very cheeky,
But that’s quite true I suppose!"
The two friends sat in silence,
Then Teddy squealed "Oh my,
The pub will soon be closing,
I think I’d better fly!"
"Oh must you?" asked poor Carla,
"That really isn’t fair,
In case you hadn’t noticed,
I was nice and cosy there!"
Our Hero smiled straight down at her,
And replied "I know you were,
But someone else will come along,
To stroke your lovely fur."
He put her on the step once more,
And then he smiled "Bye bye,
You’ve taught me there’s much more to cats,
Than really meets the eye!"
THE END.
