Geronimo and the Birthday Surprise.

Jane’s birthday was approaching,

But Geronimo the Bear,

Was in a dreadful quandary,

Almost pulling out his hair.

"Oh bother!" he groaned miserably,

"This really isn’t funny,

There’s not much I can buy her,

With my meagre pocket money."

"Like many other females,

She loves designer clothes,

But sadly I don’t stand a chance,

Of ever buying those.

I never thought I’d say this,

But birthdays are a pain,

And this one’s no exception,

As I’ve let her down again!"

He sank back in his armchair,

Feeling ever so depressed,

"It’s just no good," he muttered,

"I can’t outshine the rest!"

However in a little while,

Our Chum caught sight of Polly,

"Now there’s a thought," he giggled,

"She’s Jane’s most favourite dolly."

"My next door neighbour Lilly,

Is as clever as can be,

In fact I’m pretty certain,

She could sort this out for me.

She could knit a brand new outfit,

For this very pretty toy,

Oh now I feel so happy,

I could almost jump for joy!"

Bear leapt of his armchair,

And then picked up the doll,

While grinning "Please don’t worry,

Because we’re on a roll,

You’ll soon have a new outfit,

Which will make you look so good"

Then he ran around to Lilly’s house,

As quickly as he could.

She was sitting by the fireplace,

And wearing a wide grin,

"Oh Hello" panted Teddy,

"I’m so glad you are in."

His neighbour raised her eyebrows,

Then asked "What have you done?

The snow has started falling,

So you should be having fun!"

Geronimo looked up at her,

"I realise that!" said he,

"But I was rather hoping,

You could do a job for me.

You see, Jane’s birthday’s coming,

And I thought it would be jolly,

If you got out your needles,

And made a dress for Polly."

Lilly looked up from her pattern,

And then she smiled "I see,

I think that I can sort this out,

Just give her straight to me.

I’ve got a lot of orders,

But I’ll do my very best,

And promise when the big day’s here,

She’ll be so smarty dressed!"

"You’re brilliant!" Bear giggled,

Kissing her upon the cheek,

"And I’m very, very grateful,

As it’s been a nightmare week!"

After handing Polly over,

He headed for the door,

However one week later,

He was back again once more!

He went into the living room,

And gasped in sheer delight.

For sitting on the table,

Was an amazing sight.

The dolly was now wearing,

A brand new set of clothes,

And Teddy gasped "My goodness,

She looks so cute in those!"

"She’s got an orange dress on,

And a pure white bonnet too,

Oh Lilly, you’re amazing,

I’m so glad I came to you.

As an unexpected bonus,

You’ve put booties on her feet,

I’m sure that when Jane sees her,

Her day will be complete!"

"I hope so," smiled his neighbour,

With a twinkle in her eye,

"This job brings satisfaction,

And that I can’t deny!"

Teddy handed her some chocolates,

And laughed "Eat every one,

Because I so appreciate,

The cracking job you’ve done!"

He picked up Pretty Polly,

Then headed home so fast,

And before he even knew it,

The big day came at last.

The birthday girl woke early,

And hurried down the stairs,

Our Chum was waiting for her,

Which caught her unawares!

But when she saw her dolly,

Dressed in her brand new clothes,

She squealed "She looks fantastic,

Where on earth did she get those!"

Geronimo smiled broadly,

"Lilly knitted them!" smiled he.

"I was in a right old pickle,

So I asked her to you see!"

Jane hugged him very tightly,

And said "Well thank you Dear,

This is my favourite present,

Of that there is no fear"

So when someone has a birthday,

Take a bit of sound advice,

Don’t go spending lots of money,

Just do something very nice!
