Geronimo
Makes a New Friend.
When he was very tiny,
Geronimo the Bear,
Went to the local play school,
And so enjoyed it there.
He never minded going,
Because it was great fun,
And best of all he was great friends,
With simply everyone.
One sunny Monday morning,
He turned up at nine o’clock,
He ran through the door as usual,
And got a nasty shock.
For sitting in the corner,
Was a girl he’d never met,
She was shedding tears of sadness,
So her eyes were very wet!
"I didn’t want to come," she
sobbed,
"I really miss my Mummy,
And now there is this dreadful ache,
Inside my empty tummy!"
"The poor thing!" thought our Furry
Friend,
"This must be her first day,
It wasn’t all that long ago,
That I felt the same way!"

"I think I should go over,
And see what I can do,
Who knows? Some cheerful banter,
Might stop her feeling blue."
He went over to the little girl,
And told her "Don’t be sad,
I know you miss your Mummy,
But things are not that bad."
"This play school may seem scary,
But you’ll settle in a while,
So wipe away those tears of yours,
And let me see you smile."
"Id like to," sighed his tiny chum,
"But since I’m only three.
A great big, change like this one,
Is all to much for me!"
"I don’t know anybody,
And I’m also very shy,
That’s why it seemed a good idea,
To just sit here and cry."
Bear put an arm around her,
"You know me," he replied,
"And there’s no need to be nervous,
While I am by your side!"
"Now dry those tears," he added,
"And we’ll go and have some fun,
You’re bound to be bowled over,
By the artwork we have done!"
There was a moments silence,
Then the small girl smiled "Okay,
But only if you promise,
That beside me you will stay!"
"Of course I will!" smiled Teddy,
"Just take me by the paw,
And soon you will be laughing,
Much louder than before.
When today is finally over,
You’ll be jolly glad you came,
Now I’m feeling such a wally,
As I haven’t asked your name."
The small girl gave a giggle,
And replied "It’s Hilary,
But I don’t want to upset you,
As you’ve been so good to me!"
They went over to the table,
And then Geronimo,
Announced; "A special friend of mine,
Has come to say Hello!"
"She joined us just this morning,
And her name is Hilary,
So if you’d help her settle in,
So happy I could be!"
Debbie looked up from her painting,
And smiled "Of course I will,
I’d really like to teach her,
This most important skill!
"But first she’ll need an apron,
To cover up her dress,
For when you do potato prints,
You get in quite a mess!"
"Don’t worry!" piped up Peter,
"I’ve got a spare one here.
She can borrow it immediately,
Of that please have no fear!"
When Hilary was covered up,
She gave a little grin,
"Oh thank you!" she said quietly,
"The fun can now begin!"
Then she dipped a large potato,
Into some orange paint,
And by the time she’d finished,
Her prints looked rather quaint!
Then she found some other colours,
And seemed to go berserk,
Laughing "Oh this is fantastic,
I’m so happy in my work!"

"Well there you go," Our kind Chum
grinned,
"I told you you’d be fine,
When you show Mum your painting,
She’ll think that it’s divine!"
The fun and games continued,
And then at five to three,
Kevin giggled "We must wash our hands,
It’s home time soon you see."
"My goodness!" beamed Geronimo,
"You’re absolutely right,
We’d better get those hands washed Hills,
They look a proper sight!"
When everyone was clean again,
They all burst into song,
And because the words were easy,
The new girl sang along.
But as so often happens,
The time just slipped away,
Soon Teddy told her gently,
"We should be on our way."
"Already?" answered Hilary,
"The day has gone so fast,
I’m happy all my problems,
Are firmly in the past."
Then she turned to all her friends and smiled,
"I’m coming back tomorrow,
For I’ve learned that joining Play school,
Brings pleasure and not sorrow!"
THE END.
